This five day course is designed to provide you with an introduction to Winter Mountaineering.
Who’s it for
This course is for those with some winter mountain walking & summer scrambling experience, looking to take their first step into more challenging winter itineraries and steeper terrain, what would be a scramble in summer. Learning the core skills of Winter Mountaineering is essential before progressing to Winter Climbing.
This course is a perfect follow on from our Winter Skills course.
What’s included
- Refresh core winter skills, ice axe and crampon use, basic movement skills
- Planning, weather & avalanche forecasts
- Movement skills over grade I/II winter snow & scrambling terrain
- What to wear & carry on the mountain
- Use of a rope and climbing harness
- Snow anchors (construction and use of; bucket seat, buried axe, snow bollard & deadman)
- Rock anchors (selection and use)
- Abseiling and retreating techniques
- Emergency procedures
- Avalanche awareness, avoidance & safe route choice
- Winter navigation techniques
- Small ratio, 2:1, lots of flexibility with itinerary and route choice.

Accommodation is not included, we recommend you book a place in the town of Aviemore, where there are lots of options for hotels, B&B’s and apartments.
