NG Mountaineering is run by Lisa & Chris Newton-Goverd. They have over 50 years combined experience working in the mountains. Back in 2002 they founded the rock climbing and adventure company Rock & Sun. They ran it from their base in Spain, growing it into an extremely successful and prestigious leader in its field. In 2012 they sold the business to allow time to concentrate on their own personal goals and a growing young family. For the next 8 years they continued to work in the mountains and had lots of world wide adventures. Lisa & Chris are passionate about the outdoors and teaching high quality courses that ensure all its participants not only have a fantastic time but leave being more confident and safe in the hills and mountains. In 2020 Lisa & Chris moved back to the UK. Along with their bespoke courses they are running hill and mountain skills courses and First Aid training throughout the year.
Lisa is an all round outdoors enthusiast and qualified ML, she also teaches and assess the Mountain Training Lowland Leader and Hill & Moorland Leader Awards.
She grew up in Keynsham, south Bristol with a father who instilled in her the love of the outdoors. As a teenager she learned many outdoor skills. As an adult she kept coming back to all things outdoors, so in 2002, she gave up a successful, crazy, career in media to move full time to the mountains of Spain. Since then, she has spent her time climbing, hiking, snowboarding, paragliding, trail running and long distance point to point walking and general adventuring. She was one of the founders, and for ten years ran, the successful adventure climbing holiday business, Rock & Sun, working in Spain, Morocco & Thailand.
In 2005 she suffered a serious paragliding accident; free-falling 10 metres, crash landing breaking her back in several places. After some time in a wheelchair, she made an impressive recovery and went back to her life of climbing and worldwide adventures. This accident taught her the power of determination and positive attitude along with many practical lessons including stretching, rehabilitation and taking care of your body. Since then she has continued to climb and run, she has competed in the OMM and trained in winter mountaineering skills in Scotland.
Since moving back to the UK and after years using maps around the world, Lisa has become a complete geek with UK maps and the health benefits of navigation using the map and compass. She is passionate about teaching navigation and passing on her love of the hills & mountains.
Chris Newton-Goverd
Chris was brought up in a small village in the Mendip Hills. A combination of living in a stunning rural setting and the excellent outdoor education programme at school cemented his future career in outdoor pursuits. He is highly qualified and experienced, instructing people in the mountains & crags since the age of 18 and achieved the MIA (Mountaineering Instructor Award, now MCI) aged just 22! He then went on to complete the EML (European Mountain Leader Award, now IML), Winter Mountain Leader and Winter Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor (WMCI).
Chris is also a FREC 4 (First Response Emergency Care) and a qualified Instructor of Outdoor First Aid.
He is an all round action hero and has travelled the globe working, climbing, hiking and having adventures, including the Himalayas, America, Thailand, Africa and throughout Europe. His wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise combined with his desire to introduce people safely to the outdoors led him to found the successful company Rock and Sun in 2002. He is a well known figure in the climbing community, having bolted many new routes, including in the Costa Blanca and in Cheddar Gorge. Chris is also a trail and long distance runner. He successfully completed the Ice Ultra, considered one of the hardest long distance runs in the world, TWICE! In 2020 and again in 2022 coming tenth place.
Chris is also an active member of the Avon & Somerset Search & Rescue Team with the following qualifications; Remote Rescue Medical Technician (RRMT), Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Technician (SRT), Rope Rescue Supervisor & Rope Rescue Instructor.
