Hosted by the Mendip Hills National Landscape Rangers, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity to learn directly from the people involved in caring for, managing and protecting this nationally important landscape.
From ancient seas and dramatic limestone geology to rare habitats, human settlement and centuries of industry, the Mendips have been shaped by an extraordinary combination of natural processes and human activity.
The Story of the Mendip Hills is designed for outdoor professionals who want to develop a deeper understanding of the landscape they work, walk and teach in. Throughout the day, the National Landscape Rangers will help bring together geology, ecology, history and modern land management to explain what makes the Mendips so distinctive and why protecting them matters.
This is a Mountain Training recognised workshop and participants will receive 1 CPD point.
Learn from the Mendip Hills National Landscape Rangers
A key feature of this workshop is the opportunity to spend the day with the Mendip Hills National Landscape Rangers.
The Rangers work across the landscape and have first-hand experience of its wildlife, habitats, heritage, access, conservation and land-management challenges.
Their practical knowledge will provide a valuable insight into both the history of the Mendips and the work taking place today to protect and enhance the area.
Rather than simply learning facts about the landscape, participants will be able to explore how conservation, recreation, farming, access and environmental management interact in the real world.
For outdoor professionals, this provides an excellent opportunity to develop a more informed understanding of the places in which they lead and teach.
Learning directly from the National Landscape Rangers will also give participants a stronger understanding of current conservation messages and responsible recreation, helping them pass accurate and meaningful information on to their own groups.
The objective is to develop enough understanding to recognise what you are seeing, explain why it is significant and encourage others to become more curious about the landscape around them.
